ARTIST STATMENT
Mary Lynch
Working for many years as an oil painting restorer based in Colchester, Mary now concentrates on developing her own art practice.
On leaving school She studied fashion at the Colchester Art School and then at Hornsey College of Art. She later gained a BA in Art History and an MA in Contemporary Art. Qualifying with a PGCE, she taught art in secondary schools in the Colchester area, including 10 years at the Colchester Royal Grammar School, usually working on a part time basis while also restoring.
More recently, Mary has been concentrating on her own art work. Although picture restoration has been an enjoyable occupation for her, she wanted to give free rein to her own ideas, trying out possibilities and seeing where the imagination will lead. Creativity, experimentation and a sense of exploration were important aspects of her teaching methods and now she applies those principles to her own practice, combining these criteria with a precise and detailed method of working.
The small paintings and ceramics of flowers are examples of her earlier work. Encouraged by the success of these designs and their popularity as greetings cards, she went on to produce the larger oils on board, including Stoke by Nayland, lady and cat and the mountain scenes.
Mary has exhibited in London, Ipswich and Colchester. Her paintings are held in private collections in London, Yorkshire, Cambridgeshire, Suffolk and Colchester.
